DESTINATIONS

Northern Circuit

Mt. Meru, the fourth highest mountain in Africa, dominates Arusha National Park. Its lush hills also feature a crater and a series of lakes ranging from sweet to highly concentrated soda. It offers beautiful views, a chance to walk on the mountain, and the opportunity to study a wide variety of habitats and birds and animals, including the beautiful Colobus monkey.

Lake Manyara National Park, nestling at the foot of the Great Rift Valley, offers large concentrations of mammals, including zebra, baboons, giraffes, leopards and lions. Watch out for elephants taking a bath in the lake. The amount of avian life here is outstanding with water birds - including greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans, and storks - hornbills, crombecs and many more.

Towering over the countryside at 19,340 feet, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Those who climb The summit of KilimanjaroKili will explore lush forests, giant heath, alpine deserts reminiscent of the moon, and giant glaciers. Reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak, you'll look down on the world and see why this is called the roof of Africa.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a place unlike any other. The great crater, nearly 100 square miles in diameter, is breathtaking both from above and below. The wildlife here is so concentrated that you'll see animals interacting daily. Here, you'll find lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, elephants, buffalo, and eland, just to name a few. Importantly, this is probably the only place you'll be able to see the rare black rhinoceros.

A Maasai Elder rests at Olduvai GorgeBetween Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti is Olduvai Gorge. This seasonally arid area at the edge of the short-grass plains is best known for the archaeological finds of Louis and Mary Leakey - particularly the fossilized bones of Australopithecus boisei. There is a plentiful supply of birds here and during the rains, great herds of wildebeest come to calve, accompanied by zebra and other game.

Serengeti National Park is the flagship of the Tanzania National Parks system.A snarling cheetah in the SerengetiFamous the world over, the park offers vast vistas, beautiful hilly areas, grass, bush, woodland, and the famous Serengeti Plains. Millions of animals, including 1.5 million wildebeest, plus birds and reptiles …. this is the ultimate game viewing destination.

At certain times of the year, Tarangire National Park is alive with elephant, wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo trekking back and forth between the Tarangire River and their feeding grounds. Grazing Zebra in TarangireAlways a good place for oryx, kudu, reedbuck and other less common antelope as well as their predators, Tarangire offers the birder a chance to see the bush birds of this part of Africa.

Other Safari Destinations

The second largest national park in Tanzania, Ruaha in Southern Tanzania, provides visitors with a real bush experience The Ruaha River attracts giant crocodiles and hippos, elephants, greater kudu as well as the lesser kudu, roan and sable antelope, and many other species. Ruaha is at its best from June to November when conditions are hot and dry.

Selous Game Reserve, at 22,000-square-miles (35,000 sq. km), is the largest in Africa. The reserve is home to vast numbers of animals and birds. Elephants, crocodiles, hippos, buffalo and antelope abound, especially near the Rufiji River. Remote and wild, the Selous is sure to please those who visit, despite the heat and humidity.

Gombe Stream and Mahale National Parks. A meditating Chimp, Lake Tanganyika Although Gombe Stream, the site of Jane Goodall's groundbreaking work on chimpanzees, is more famous, Mahale offers a better all-round safari experience. With a couple of permanent camps on the pristine shores of Lake Tanganyika, the forested hills behind are full of the sounds and sights of chimps, other primates and birds. Go snorkeling or fishing on the sparkling waters of Lake Tanganyika. A truly unforgettable experience.

Katavi National Park is quite close to Mahale but due to the lack of roads, access is by aircraft. A million acres of national park, broad flood plains and woodlands. This is the place for hippos and buffalo, roan and sable antelope; and, best of all, no people. Walk, drive off road, sit and watch the wildlife. Enjoy the African bush to the full.

We also organise trips to Rubondo Island, on Lake Victoria with more chimps, otters, crocs, and many many birds. Katavi is another under-developed dry season park where you can experience the real African bush. Destinations in Kenya can also be organised in conjunction with Tanzania.
