THE LOW SEASON SAFARI

Accommodations: Mid priced lodges and tented lodges
Season: April, May and June only
Fitness Rating: Easy
Cost: Medium/Low
We love Tanzania in the rains. The landscapes are incredibly beautiful and lush. Rainbows fill the sky while views are magnificent in the clear air. Wildlife in the Serengeti is wonderful, few other tourists are around and the weather is perfect except that it does rain. But not all day every day. On those days that it does rain, there are usually morning and afternoon rainstorms followed by brilliant, clear skies and the wonderful smells of drying vegetation. And very important for you, the price is right.
Top quality lodges ensure comfort, good food, a place to come "home" to. We believe a slower pace offers people the opportunity to enjoy wildlife interactions, appreciate the vastness and beauty of Africa and sample something of its peace, as well as its excitement. On the final day of your safari we fly you back to Arusha to avoid a full day of driving on bumpy roads.
| Day 1 | Arrive in Arusha, dinner and overnight at Mt Meru Game Lodge, a small intimate lodge at the foot of Mt Meru just outside Arusha Town. Overnight here.
| Day 2 | Drive to Naitolia Camp, north-east of Tarangire National Park. Your first day in Tanzania is quite an easy one, with not too much driving and the opportunity to sit and watch the wildlife from your room/tent, go for short or more strenuous walks or game drives. You have a day to recover, slow down and reach out for the peace of the African bush. But this should also be an excellent chance to see plenty of wildlife. Naitolia Camp is small and intimate, with only four accommodations, each is a delightful mix of room and tent, making the most of the surroundings. Night drives can also be taken here and at this time of year there may be more animals than in Tarangire itself.
| Day 3 | Drive to Tarangire National Park if you wish, or stay around Naitolia Camp, it's your choice. Tarangire National Park is the home of elephants and baobab trees, the strange upside down trees of African legend. You have the day to explore the park. Drive back to Naitolia for a second night here.
| Day 4 | A day in Lake Manyara National Park, which is squeezed in between the lake and the rift valley escarpment. Tree climbing lions and flamingoes are possibilities here, as well as many other birds and animals. At the end of the day you climb the rift valley wall to spend the night atop this escarpment, at Manyara Serena, where the swimming pool seems to tip over the escarpment and views over Lake Manyara are spectacular.
| Day 5 | After breakfast, you climb up to Ngorongoro Crater rim and down into the crater for a day's game drive with picnic lunch. At the end of the day you drive to Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, built into the rim of the crater. Wonderful views and comfort for your two nights here.
| Day 6 | After breakfast, you descend for a second day into the crater, coming home again to Ngorongoro Serena for your sundowner overlooking the crater, dinner and overnight.
| Day 7 | This morning you will visit Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leaky did their groundbreaking and truly exciting work on the origins of mankind. There is a small museum and the opportunity to hear a short lecture on the history of the gorge. Chances are, you will be surrounded by herds of animals. You will have a picnic lunch and a chance to explore the far south of the famous short grass plains ecosystem before driving to Ndutu Lodge for dinner and overnight.
| Day 8 | Perhaps you would like to take a breakfast walk today around Lake Ndutu? In any case you have a full day here in the short grass plains seeking out the great herds or the forest animals around Ndutu. Perhaps you will see a serval cat. Lunch at the lodge or take a picnic for a full day's game drive. Dinner and overnight at Ndutu Lodge.
| Day 9 | Drive into the Serengeti National Park. Tonight and tomorrow you will stay at the Serengeti Serena. Spend your days exploring the Serengeti. Lunch today will be a picnic to give you the opportunity to explore the southern part of the Serengeti on your way to your lodge. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Serena.
| Day 10 | Explore some more of this vast and wonderful eco-system, on this, your last day here, perhaps you want to go east, north..... Lunch at the lodge or take a picnic. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Serena.
| Day 11 | You will have an opportunity for a short game drive on this, your final morning in the Serengeti, then continue on to Seronera for your flight to Arusha. Drive to Oldonyo Orok, which borders Arusha National Park, for your last night in Tanzania. This is a small individual lodge on the edge of the park, from where you will be able to walk tomorrow.
| Day 12 | A morning walk on your last morning here, on the lower slopes of Mt. Meru, the fourth highest mountain in Africa. Walk through the groundwater forest of giant fig trees and deep bush. Perhaps you catch a glimpse of the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys, or blue monkeys, which you have probably not yet seen. Or perhaps you prefer a final game drive today. With a little planning you arrive back at the park gate and Arusha in time for an afternoon bus to Nairobi, or if you are leaving from Kilimanjaro International Airport, you have time for a comfortable lunch at a private house with views of Mt. Meru. |
